Evaluation.

I have definitely learnt ALOT from this brief! At the beginning when given this brief I panicked as i had never heard or been on After Effects before. I also have to say a big thank you to Mike Flower who helped me a great deal, he was brilliant.

For my animation I wanted to use type, as it is becoming a big interest of mine. I started with various different ideas; my initial idea was to use kinetic type on top of photographs, then i thought about possibly animating the type and incorporating small pictures into. This then turned into mostly kinetic type with several images alongside the type, of which I am happy with.  I do like what I have done but i know that it is not the smoothest or spot on animation or skills within After Effects, however i have learnt and applied the skills of which I learnt through this brief. I have also enjoyed learning these new skills and i do think these skills will help me personally and i feel i can adapt these skills to outside projects.

I do think i could have tried other ideas, looked more into different techniques, and ways of which I could have made the transitions in my kinetic type smoother. I would also like to now experiment with images, along with the cameras and the way in which you can pan around a big image.

Through this brief i have seen an improvement in my organisation as in uploading each ideas and development onto my blog, along with maybe bad ideas.

If i was to do this again i would definitely try and absorb as much information and techniques as I could, and look at several different ways of doing things as another way may be more effective. I also want to continue experimenting in After Effects as i did enjoy myself, and i can see ways in which I can apply this to other areas of my personal work.

Creating my packaging.
Rather than my initial idea of having the shirt as the packaging i decided to take the idea from the title sequence of using the characteristics of the 'nerds' and represent it on my packaging. I quite like the simplicity as i didn't want my packaging to reflect a younger audience of which I thought it was going to do.

Cut out of the glasses to add some reflective paper on the inside.

There is the red background in the inside of which i used as my background on the title sequence and idents.

Thursday 17 February 2011

I think this will be the one!

Although i did like the idea of having the shirt as the packaging, I don't think that would suit an older audience looked a bit childish.
Packaging idea 2
My other idea was to create a simplistic design of images of the stereotypical characteristics of a 'nerd'. On the other hand i am uncertain how to incorporate my title sequence colours and style to it..

I like this design below!!!
what i could do is have this on the outside and keep it really simple, then have the red background in the inside of the packaging. Therefore incorporating the design and theory behind the project.

Packaging

What I am thinking is to use a shirt as the packaging.. At first my initial idea was the shirt to open, then when thinking about it, thats slightly strange! So then i thought about the packaging design below. I also want to test with some of the colours from the title sequence I chose to see how this could work.

Iv added the pantone colours of which i used in my designs for the title sequence and idents. However I really don't like this design as i don't think it looks professional.. Maybe slightly childish which I do NOT want it to be.

Type - Week 6 & 7
Layout for different audiences

We were given a document containing 2 pages worth of text along with one image.
We were then asked to create three different layouts for:

Academic Journal
Sunday Supplement
Magazine 16 - 21

Academic Journal Ideas:

Sunday Supplement

When talking to Graham and actually thinking about it, the sunday supplement needs to catch people's attention, stand out from the adverts in the magazine. The image is the perfect way to catch people's attention, so make it BIG! Two columns is also the norm for something like this.

Magazine

Quality

 Dynamic

Type - Week 5
Painting a layout.

Oppresive..
Oppressive feeling heavy, something weighing down on you.

Placid..

Placid is a calm feeling, not challenging nor is it making you strain to look at it. Should probably be abit more boring? Possibly a full page of a light shade of black.

Packaging ideas.
What i am thinking about doing is possible using one of my photographs of a 'nerd' on the front of my packaging. Or maybe just using the shirt as the front cover shown below.

Maybe I could have a pattern on the inside of the packaging, such as all different drawings of stationary?

Nearly finished from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

So close!! I really like it, there are just some parts of which i think can be improved. Such as the section where the type of 'uncool in school' changes could fit the type better. Also i think the type at the end should move off the page as the song mutes.

Near to final from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

Nearly there!! Few more tweaks and sort out some of the synchronised text and it will be ready!
Type.

In this lecture we were looking at how you can create a layout from a technique known as 'painting' this is where you paint the mood using blocks to express the feel of the subject your looking to portray, then this is gives you a layout.

For example the friendly layout has a big margin and a lot of white space around the squares yet the squares where the type would be placed is close together creating a sort of bond.

Angry..

This is too thought about. If you are angry, your irrational, mixed emotions, so you wouldn't have even square it would be all over the place.

Friendly..
Friendly is happy, happy is not so much a light font because it is not quiet! its quite a bold, strong, level feeling. And if you were to express happy/friendly sing type you wouldn't really use an extra light type.

Precious..

Precious you want to express a unique feeling, slightly expensive maybe. A bigger bolder shape against a lighter smaller shape would probably work better.

Second idea with audio..

I like both ideas so maybe what i could do is to combine the both. Whilst the talking is playing the music slightly quieter then becomes louder when it stops.

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

Audio with the kinetic type!!

Along with the audio of the commentary i thought possibly a tune underneath? This might help make the idea of the show comical? I quite like this song to do this job so ill try it!

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

My first bit of audio added!!

I want to now add the next section of audio then possibly add sound effects such as tuning into the radio section and also maybe a sound for the action man scene. I did think about a backing track at the start however im in the same sort of frame mind that it doesn't really suit this.
2nd half of my final title sequence - rough!!

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

When i actually thought of this idea i was really excited to do it! However i want to actually draw in the wave and also the lunchbox and then i can add the audio of which i have recorded! Yey!
To the sound booth!!

I had asked my friend Marty to do my voice recording as i needed a male voice for my animation.
To begin Mike showed me how to set it up the day before so i was then able to crack on with it whenever i was free.
Firstly turning everything on and making sure the microphone was plugged in, and also if it was plugged into the first channel.

The first program to edit was this..
I had to make sure the second smaller button on the left was clicked, which would then activate the microphone.

Then I opened Audacity. Here i made sure the level/sensitivity of the microphone was just right. Then begin recording!

Once i had my recording i then exported it and made sure the file was saved as an AIFF file, as then it would work in After Effects.

Few cheeky photographs:

TO THE SOUNDBOOTH!
going to record my audio today..
Storyboard for final title sequence..

With this storyboard i really like the second sheet.. where the images are involved within the sequence. i like the transition between the ruler to the classical music symbol then into the waveform, i think this will work really well to carry on the title sequence. However after doing the type from the start, it takes up quite a lot of the time. So i will have to experiment with the timings and pace of my title sequence, along with adding the audio to it.

Ident 1 - Storyboard.
This could be another idea, having the type actually in a computer, as if the nerd is actually typing up the ident.
Ident 2

This is far from done!

As it is too long, and some of the type moves before it should.. ITS REALLY ROUGH!

IDENT 1

I quite like this idea as it is taken from the end of my title sequence however is it a bit boring? if it is going to be a comedy?

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

Simplistic idea.

I want to add typing noises to it!
Think this would make it better.

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

Getting there! This is my most recent idea for my kinetic type.. It is not finished yet as i still have the add the audio and also the slight noises such as typing to it. But so far im kind of happy with how its going.

Sunday 6 February 2011

Iv decided to keep the title/logo of the program really simple, i just want to have a good 'geeky' font of which i think suits the idea and then animate it as if it is being typed. However for the actual logo i would like it to be simple and be highlighted, like the yellow one bellow however with white writing? or maybe the red logo highlight and white writing so it is more legible.
Changed my mind...

though i thought my initial design for having quite a bulky logo was a good idea.
I know think it would be better to have a very simplistic logo.. something not as animated, slightly shy/boring as stereotypical 'nerds' are portrayed.

What i want to do it have the logo as the type itself, and make it look like it has been typed on the computer.
Another attempt..

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

I really quite like this sequence for the start, however there are a few things that need changing. For example the part where it says 'and here are the' is too slow. However the timings will be determined by the audio of which I am recording tomorrow. Also the rotation isn't very smooth at one point, but that can easily be fixed.

Also i thought of not adding the logo at the end of 15 seconds and at the end of the 50, and just carrying on with the rest of the animations.
Really rough starting of what i want to do!

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.
I also really need to work on perfecting using the cameras because this is what i want to do a lot within my animation

Saturday 5 February 2011

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

This is the idea im going for - then moving over the logo and fading out the type to reveal the time and name of the programme. Unless i put the program details on first then add the channel for logo with the time on at the end of the stings
Logo - this was one of my ideas to add to the end of the stings to advertise the time and channel.

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

With the logo i am animating this also by lightening it up and use the phrase 'comedy to brighten up your day' however i'm starting to think that it doesn't really express the program much. So what i might possibly do is use the pencil in both the logo and stings to draw out my designs for each idea which will then link both together and advertise the program within the channel 4 logo.
Logo - with this I wanted to try animating my branding as it was to link it into the starting of the title sequence.

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

What i might possibly do is to animate the pencils and images more? Could maybe have the pencil draw a bow around the logo?

This was another idea for the starting of my title sequence. I wanted to make the line along with the word type  to rotate around as in a cube, rotating to reveal the text, however its not done smoothly as i should have used the parent and child technique so they all moved at the same rate, speed and time.

Untitled from Kimberley Sandford_91256 on Vimeo.

This was just another idea to zoom into and rotate the logo and reveal the type, however this isn't too clear.
Ident 1 - Storyboard.
I think i could maybe use the last section of my title sequence for an ident. Then have the words type out one after each other. then add the logo, time and channel at the end of the ident.

Type - Week 4

Printing.

Your job in your responsibility, work out how much it would cost on the different printers/ways of printing and work out which one is most effective for the job.

Talk to printers about how things can be done, how they will be done & also learn the techniques.

Leaflets.

You could make a leaflet any size if it fits onto A sized paper - thinking of costs all the time, a leaflet that is a slightly different shape will interest people more, but if it still fits on A sized paper it will not cost you any more.

Also folds are a key thing to look at when designing a leaflet.
-what information needs to be on it (designs & type)

Concertina fold:

add own folding....

Gate fold:

Design a leaflet.
Containing 3 A4 pages of type & 7 images.

First Attempt: doesn't look too bad however, i need to include more of the pictures and maybe play around more with the type and layout of the centre pages.

i also do not like the paragraph in the bottom left corner, it doesn't work because there is not enough space around it.

This is my second attempt as i got told my alignment to the right was WRONG VERY WRONG, also there were quite a few amendments to my design to make sure it has a wide margin.
